Question on Quora,
Amazing things will happen to you. Nancy Poh’s answer gives you a lot of information. Your butt will quickly toughen up, and you won’t notice the miles as much. Hydrate. Protect your skin. Protect your head!
But the amazing part will be the positive changes to your body and mind. Unnecessary weight drops off and is replaced by muscle. Your cardiovascular system becomes a beast, flowing oxygen-rich blood to your legs. Your heart builds an arterial network unlike sedentary folk, a network that can save your life. I know. My heart developed new pathways that kept a widow-maker 100% blockage of my LAD at bay. Doctor said cycling saved my life.
You’ll have the quads of a soccer or US football superstar. You’ll look good in your clothes. You’ll have an interesting tan: below your socks and about mid-bicep, and probably your entire torso lacks a tan. The rest of you is impressively bronzed.
Your senses of smell, vision, and hearing will improve. The sounds of cycling will change. At first, you hear a cacophony of noise. Later, the clicking of the miles passing by become a welcomed silence. The sounds of kids, commerce, and even danger will become distinct. You are relaxing, but you are on edge.
The neighborhoods will develop identities you never knew as the sights, sounds, and smells of different cultures are discovered by you. My favorite rides are Saturday morning: odors of breakfast or lunch cooking, laundry, yard work, business…the smells are rich and infectious. The sounds go hand-in-hand with the smells.
The importance of the environment and ecology will grow in you as you pass by trash and waste. You’ll notice the twitch of a car tire, the head turn of a driver, the darting child chasing a ball, and the damn squirrels. Bike skills go into your DNA. You will become a better car driver, and that protects all of your family. You’ll save some bucks on gas (but spend it on better bikes and bike stuff).
And the miles pass by….
Richard, wrote a great answer, but?
Richard,
I agree with just about everything you said; except the body needs rest days, to clear out the free radicals, and the muscles should rest. I believe there are fewer injuries and better health!
Having spent my life in sports, like scrambles, motocross, mountain biking, running, duathlon, and triathlon, and just hardcore cycling, at 77 I still ride about 100km a week.
Personally, I believe athletes are way overtrained these days, possibly why there are so many injuries?
